Cover protector or heater protector, which one do I need?
The part name says which. The cover protector is for winter covers, the fabric and foam a mouse will happily shred for nesting material. The heater protector is for the heater cabinet, where a shut down unit is warm, dry, and full of wiring worth chewing. Plenty of pools get both.
What is the difference between the retail and serviceman packages?
Packaging, not the pool. The retail package is set up for a homeowner closing one pool, and the serviceman package is set up for a pro working through a route of closings. Pick whichever matches how many pools you are putting to bed.
When should I apply it?
At closing, as the equipment goes down for the season, before the cover goes on and before the heater is shut and left. Read the label first and follow the directions on it for placement and reapplication, since that is the version written for the product in your hand.
