Jonas winter closing kit #3, part NJ2603C4 and stocked under SKU PST-NJ2603C4, is the large pool package, sized for up to 30,000 gallons. It contains 1 gallon of 20 percent polyquat winter algaecide, 1 quart of stain and scale preventer, and 4.5 lb of buffer and borate tabs with a floating canister. Underdosing a big pool is the most common closing mistake, and it shows up in April as a green pool that takes a week and a case of shock to recover. Buying the right size kit up front is cheaper than fixing it later.

My pool is bigger than 30,000 gallons. What then?
Order a kit plus additional algaecide to cover the difference, or step to two kits. Never stretch one kit across a larger pool, because a half dose of algaecide is close to no dose at all.
Does a mesh safety cover change the dose?
It changes the demand. Mesh covers let sunlight and rain through, so those pools see more algae pressure and more dilution. Consider the mesh cover specific kit if you run one.
When exactly do I add the algaecide?
After shocking, once free chlorine has dropped back toward normal. High chlorine oxidizes polyquat and wastes it, which is why order of operations matters at closing.
