Description
Jonas Winter Algaecide, 1 Gallon, 10 Percent Polyquat
The one closing chemical you should not skip.
Jonas winter algaecide, part NJ2503C4 and stocked under SKU PST-NJ2503C4, is a 1 gallon bottle of 10 percent polyquat, the algaecide class that pool professionals use for closings. Polyquat is non-foaming and contains no metals, so it cannot stain a plaster or vinyl surface the way a copper algaecide can. Add it at closing and it stays active in the water through the months when nothing is circulating and nothing is being tested, which is exactly when algae gets its foothold. A green opening costs far more in shock, labor, and filter runtime than a gallon of algaecide does.

Why polyquat instead of a cheaper algaecide?
Copper algaecides can stain, and quaternary ammonium algaecides foam. Polyquat does neither, which is why it is the standard choice for a pool that will sit closed for months.
When do I add it during a closing?
After the water is balanced and the pool has been shocked and the chlorine has come back down. Adding algaecide into a high chlorine pool wastes it, because the shock oxidizes the algaecide.
How much do I need?
Follow the label dose for your pool volume. A mesh safety cover lets light and rain through, so those pools generally need the higher end of the range.
