The Jonas Safety Zone mesh cover winter kit, part NJ2683 and stocked under SKU PST-NJ2683, is the closing package for pools running a mesh safety cover, sized to 30,000 gallons. Mesh covers are excellent at safety and at shedding leaves, but they pass sunlight and rain, and rain brings phosphates straight into the pool all winter. That is why this kit adds 1 quart of phosphate remover to the usual 1 gallon of 20 percent polyquat algaecide, 1 quart of stain and scale preventer, and 4.5 lb of buffer and borate tabs with a floating canister. Strip the phosphates and the algae has nothing to eat come March.

Why does a mesh cover need a different kit?
Mesh passes light and rain. Light drives algae growth and rain carries phosphates into the pool all winter, so a mesh closing needs phosphate removal and a full strength algaecide dose that a solid cover closing can sometimes get away without.
Should I use this with a solid cover?
You can, and the phosphate remover will not hurt anything. For a solid cover, the standard kit #3 covers the same volume for less money.
Does the water level matter under a mesh cover?
Yes. Mesh covers let rain and snowmelt in, so the level rises over the winter. Follow your cover manufacturer's guidance on where to set the water at closing and check it midwinter if you can.
