The "RJ" return-jet design mounts the salt cell vertically beneath your pool's return-jet fitting on the outside of the pool wall — no cutting into existing plumbing required. Connect the lower end with 2" rigid PVC or 1-1/2" / 1-1/4" flexible hose, plug in, add salt, and you're done.

What's the difference between the "RJ" and "HP" models?
The RJ (Return Jet) model mounts the salt cell directly to the return-jet fitting on the outside of your pool — perfect for above-ground pools. The HP model uses hose or PVC pipe connections instead. If your above-ground pool has a standard return jet, the RJ is the simpler install.
What does "TL" mean in the model number?
"TL" stands for Twist-Lock, referring to the included line cord and outlet. Twist-lock plugs deliver a secure connection that won't accidentally pull free, which is especially important for outdoor pool equipment exposed to weather and use.
How much salt does the pool need?
Hayward recommends a salt concentration of approximately 3,200 PPM (parts per million) for optimal performance. For an 18,000-gallon pool starting from zero, that's roughly 480 lbs of pool-grade salt. Always test your salt level before adding more.
Will it work with my existing filter pump?
Yes. The AquaTrol's timer-controlled outlet works with virtually any standard above-ground pool pump. The pump plugs into the AquaTrol, and the AquaTrol plugs into the outlet your pump was using.
How long does the TurboCell last?
The included T-CELL-5 TurboCell typically lasts 3 to 5 years depending on usage and water chemistry. Maintaining proper salt levels and balanced water dramatically extends cell life. Replacement cells (T-CELL-5, GLX-CELL-5, or TCELLS318) are available.
Can I install this myself?
Many homeowners install the AquaTrol themselves in about 30 minutes since it requires no hardwiring (it simply plugs in). However, Hayward recommends professional installation by a qualified pool technician to ensure proper setup and to validate any manufacturer warranty claims.
Does it work in cold weather?
Salt chlorine generators stop producing chlorine when water temperature drops below approximately 60°F. In winterized regions, you'll typically shut down and winterize the unit along with your pool. Most owners remove the cell and store the control box indoors during the off-season.
