Coates ST Series 12411ST 11 kW 240V Electric Spa Heater
11 kW of electric heat for your spa.
The Coates ST Series 12411ST electric spa heater (SKU PST-_12411ST) puts 11 kW, rated at 37,543 BTU/hr, on a single-phase 240 volt circuit. Coates builds it around a stainless steel tank that steers your spa's water across two 5.5 kW Incoloy elements, with a digital thermostat, a manual reset high limit and a flow switch that keeps it off until water is moving. It is UL listed for indoor or outdoor installation on spas and hot tubs with a forced water circulation system.
Coates lists two 5.5 kW, 240 volt elements on the 11 kW model and one on the 5.5 kW 12406ST.
Two Elements, 11 kW of Heat
The 12411ST splits its output across two 5.5 kW Incoloy heating elements, switched by heavy duty contactors, for a combined 11 kW and 37,543 BTU/hr on a single-phase 240 volt supply. Coates rates the heater at 46 amps and recommends a 60 amp circuit. If an element ever needs replacing, Coates calls for Coates elements only, and its manual gives a quick ohmmeter check of about 10.5 ohms per element with the power disconnected and the element wires removed.
Above this, Coates calls for an external bypass.
No Flow, No Heat
A built-in flow switch keeps the elements off until water is moving, and Coates rates the heater for 15 to 80 GPM through its stainless steel tank. Coates warns that higher flow may damage the heater and calls for an external bypass to hold flow inside that range. Two status lights on the front panel show at a glance whether there is enough flow and whether the elements are powered, which is also where Coates' troubleshooting guide starts.
Coates' safety instructions say spa water should never exceed 104°F.
Digital Thermostat Control
The digital thermostat reads the water temperature as it enters the heater and lets you set your spa anywhere from 40°F to 104°F (5°C to 40°C), shown in °F or °C on the LED display. A HEATING light shows when it is calling for heat. If the water ever gets too hot, the manual reset high temperature limit cuts power to the elements, and it stays off until the water cools and you press reset.

Coates says only qualified personnel, as defined by NEC Article 100, should install and maintain this heater, and the wiring must follow NEC Article 680, with GFCI protection, a disconnect with over-current protection and a bonding wire to the lug provided. Never run the heater without water, and keep spa water at or below 104°F.

What breaker and wire does the 12411ST need?
Coates rates it at 46 amps and recommends a 60 amp circuit. The manual lists #4 AWG copper supply wire rated at 60°C, and the cut sheet lists #6 AWG at 75°C. The supply must be single-phase, 2-wire 240 VAC, protected by a GFCI per NEC Article 680.
Can I use it on a saltwater spa?
No. Coates says this heater is not for use in salt water, and that its standard stainless steel heaters are not recommended with salt chlorine generators. For salt systems, Coates points you to its separate salt water heater line.
What flow rate does it need?
Between 15 and 80 GPM. The built-in flow switch keeps the heater off when there is no flow, and Coates calls for an external bypass if your system pushes more than 80 GPM, since higher flow may damage the heater.
What size spa is it for?
Coates positions the ST Series for residential spas between 250 and 600 gallons. Coates also publishes a sizing guide that works out the kilowatts you need from your spa's volume and the temperature rise you want per hour.
Does it need a pressure relief valve?
No relief valve ships with the heater, and Coates says none is required under UL Standard 1261. Do not install a shut-off valve between the heater and the spa; a check valve is acceptable.

Needed to replace the control overlay on our Nordic Impulse hot tub, but could not find out the make or model number of the actual control panel on our tub. By taking measurements and photos or our actual control panel button positions and functions, I was able to narrow down the options. I ordered this overlay as the button positions seemed to be in the right positions, even though the overall size was smaller than the control panel. The overlay works, in that all buttons and functions are in the right place, and the overlay seems to have adhered well to the panel. It is not a perfect match, as it is smaller overall than it should be. But I am happy with the result and will buy an additional identical overlay as a backup in case this one, too, deteriorates at some point. Took a lot of detecting, but the result is successful!
