What is the difference between a closed plug and an open plug?
A closed plug seals the line completely once it is set. An open plug passes air, so you can blow the line out with the plug already in place and let the pressure escape instead of building behind a dead end. Closed plugs are the default for returns; open styles and the Duck Plug valve are for lines you want to clear or vent after plugging.
How do I size the plug to my plumbing?
Measure the opening before you order. The size in the part name is the plumbing the plug is built for, and the difference between a 1 1/2 inch and a 1 7/8 inch plug is the difference between a seal and a leak. Threaded sizes such as MPT screw into a matching female fitting rather than wedging inside a pipe.
Does plugging the lines protect the pool from freezing?
Plugging is the last step, not the whole job. Lower the water below the returns, blow the lines clear, then plug so nothing refills them. The skimmer still needs its own protection, whether that is a compensator, a skimmer plug, or a cover plate over the throat.
