The multiport valve is the busiest control on your pool pad, yet it is the one most owners understand the least. That single handle decides whether your water gets filtered, flushed, drained, or simply pushed in a circle. Turn it to the wrong position at the wrong time and you can send clean water down the drain — or tear the seal inside the valve in a single second.
This guide walks through every position on a standard multiport valve, what each one actually does to the water, and exactly when to reach for it. Whether you run a top-mount valve on a sand filter or a side-mount on a large cartridge system, the positions work the same way.
First, the one rule that protects your valve
Always shut off the pump before you move the handle. The valve seals against a soft internal gasket (the “spider gasket”). Rotating the handle while water is under pressure grinds that gasket and is the number-one cause of valves that leak to waste. Power down, press the handle down, rotate to the new position, then restart.
Never start the pump with the handle parked between two positions, either. Line it up firmly on the setting you want before you flip the switch.

Every position, explained
Filter
This is home base. Water enters the valve, travels down through the sand or media, leaves its dirt behind, and returns to the pool clear. Leave the valve here for normal circulation and whenever you vacuum ordinary debris that you want captured by the filter. If you only ever learn one position, this is it.
Backwash
Over time, trapped dirt clogs the media and your filter pressure creeps up. Backwash reverses the water so it flows up through the bed and carries that dirt out the waste line instead of the pool. Rinse
Backwashing leaves the media bed loose and unsettled. Rinse runs water down through the bed like Filter mode but sends it to waste, packing the sand back into place and clearing the last of the loosened dirt so it never reaches your pool. Twenty to thirty seconds is plenty. Skipping Rinse is why some pools get a puff of cloudy water right after a backwash.
Waste (Drain)
Waste bypasses the filter entirely and routes water straight to the waste line. Reach for it when you need to remove water rather than clean it: lowering the level after heavy rain, draining for winter, or vacuuming a heavy algae bloom or fine silt that you do not want clogging your filter. Keep an eye on the water level so you never let the pump run dry.
Recirculate
Recirculate also skips the filter, but it sends water back to the pool instead of to waste. It is useful for pushing chemicals around the pool quickly, or for keeping water moving while the filter itself is opened up for service. Because nothing is being filtered, treat it as a short-term setting, not a way to run the pool.
Closed
Closed stops all flow through the valve so you can safely open the pump or filter. This is a pump-off setting only — running the pump against a closed valve builds dangerous pressure and can crack the tank or valve body.
Winter / Winterize
Not every valve has this mark. Where present, it parks the internal diverter halfway between ports so the spider gasket is not compressed all winter. Set it during closing, with the pump off and the system drained.
Common multiport valve mistakes
- Turning the handle with the pump running. The fastest way to ruin a spider gasket. Power down first, every time.
- Forgetting to Rinse after Backwash. You will chase cloudy water that a 20-second Rinse would have prevented.
- Leaving it on Recirculate. The water looks like it is being cleaned, but nothing is passing through the media.
- Vacuuming fine algae on Filter. It blows the fines back through the returns. Use Waste for heavy or fine debris.
When the setting is right but the valve still leaks
If water runs continuously out the waste line while you are on Filter, or your handle springs up and will not stay put, the problem is inside the valve, not your technique. A steady trickle to waste almost always means a worn spider gasket, and a handle that will not hold usually means a tired handle assembly. Frequently asked questions
Can I leave my multiport valve on Recirculate overnight?
You can, but you should not make a habit of it. Recirculate moves water without filtering it, so debris and cloudiness build up. Use it briefly to mix chemicals or during filter service, then return to Filter.
Why is water going out the waste line while I am on Filter?
That points to a worn spider gasket inside the valve, which lets water leak into the waste channel. A new gasket usually fixes it; if not, the valve body may be worn. See our spider gasket replacement guide.
Should I vacuum on Filter or Waste?
Vacuum on Filter for everyday dirt you want captured. Switch to Waste for heavy debris, fine silt, or an algae bloom — those clog the media and are better sent straight out the waste line. Just watch your water level.
How often should I backwash?
