Pool shock is the reset button for your water — and it is the one chemical most owners reach for at the wrong time, in the wrong amount, or of the wrong type. Dumped in carelessly it can bleach a liner, cloud the water, or do almost nothing at all. Used deliberately, it clears a hazy pool, kills off an algae bloom before it spreads, and knocks out that harsh “pool smell” that scares swimmers away.
This guide walks through the whole job the way you would actually do it on a Saturday: what shocking really accomplishes, how to tell when your pool is asking for it, which product to grab, and the exact order of operations that gets you back to clear, swimmable water without wrecking anything.
First, what “shocking” actually means
Shocking — the pros call it superchlorination — means adding a big, deliberate dose of oxidizer all at once to burn through contaminants your everyday sanitizer cannot keep up with. The key idea is combined chlorine. When free chlorine attacks sweat, sunscreen, urine, and organic debris, it forms spent compounds called chloramines. Those chloramines are weak sanitizers, they sting eyes, and they are the real source of the sharp chemical odor people blame on “too much chlorine.” The truth is the opposite: a smelly pool usually needs more chlorine, fast, to break past that point.
A proper shock dose pushes free chlorine high enough to blow through the chloramines — the “breakpoint” — and reset the water. Get the dose right and the odor, the burning eyes, and the haze all clear together as the level falls back to normal.
Shock is a strong oxidizer. A few non-negotiable rules keep you and your pool safe:
- Never mix two shock products, and never combine shock with any other chemical (chlorine + acid can release toxic gas). One product, one bucket, one job.
- Always add shock to water — pre-dissolve it in a bucket — not water to shock. Add it to the pool, never the pool to it.
- Work outdoors, upwind, in gloves and eye protection. Keep the lid closed and the product bone-dry in storage.
- Do it in the evening so sunlight does not burn off the dose before it works.
When your pool is asking for a shock
You do not need to shock on a fixed calendar. Shock in response to what the water and the season are doing. The usual triggers:
- After heavy use — a pool party, a hot holiday weekend, a crowd of kids. Lots of swimmers means lots of chloramines.
- When the water turns cloudy or dull. If it has lost its sparkle, run down the cause with our guide to diagnosing cloudy pool water — a shock is often step one.
- At the first sign of algae. Green, cloudy, or slick walls call for a heavy shock to kill the bloom before it takes over. Not sure what you are looking at? Check the common pool algae types.
- After a heavy rain or storm. Runoff drops in organics and dilutes your sanitizer at the same time.
- At opening and closing. A strong shock is part of both spring opening and buttoning the pool up for winter.
- When the water smells strongly of chlorine or swimmers complain of stinging eyes — the chloramine signal we covered above.
Which shock should you use?
“Shock” is a category, not a single product, and picking the right one matters. There are three types worth knowing:
Calcium hypochlorite (cal-hypo). The workhorse. High available chlorine, unstabilized, inexpensive, and the strongest choice for killing algae and clearing a bad pool. It is not stabilized against sunlight, which is exactly why you add it at night. Pre-dissolve it for vinyl-liner pools so undissolved granules do not settle and bleach the floor.
Dichlor. A stabilized granular chlorine that dissolves fast and is gentle enough for routine boosts. Because it adds cyanuric acid (stabilizer) with every dose, it is convenient but can build your stabilizer up over time — handy occasionally, not as your everyday heavy shock.
Non-chlorine shock (potassium monopersulfate, or MPS). An oxygen-based oxidizer that clears organics and restores sparkle without raising chlorine. Its big advantage: you can swim about 15 minutes later. It oxidizes but does not disinfect, so it is great for routine maintenance and a quick refresh — but reach for chlorine when you are fighting algae or bacteria.

How to shock your pool, step by step
Here is the routine from start to finish. It takes about twenty minutes of hands-on work; the rest is letting the pump do its job.
Before anything else, check your numbers — especially pH. Shock works best with pH in the 7.2–7.6 range; too high and much of the dose is wasted. If pH is off, correct it first (lowering pH or raising alkalinity as needed). A good drop-style kit that reads free chlorine with FAS-DPD tells you exactly where you stand — here is how to use one.
Shock is dosed by water volume, so you need your pool’s gallons. Follow the label for the product you bought: a normal maintenance shock is roughly one pound per 10,000–13,000 gallons, while a heavy, algae-killing dose is two to three times that. When in doubt, measure to the label rather than eyeballing it — more is not better.
Fill a clean five-gallon bucket with pool water, then slowly pour in the measured granular shock — chemical into water, stirring gently. This prevents undissolved granules from sinking and bleaching a spot on the liner. Some cal-hypo and most dichlor products dissolve quickly, but pre-dissolving is cheap insurance on any soft-sided pool.
Turn the pump on so the water is circulating, then walk the pool’s edge and pour the dissolved shock in a slow, steady stream around the perimeter, out over the deeper water where you can. Adding it in the evening keeps the sun from burning off an unstabilized dose before it has done its work.
Keep the pump and filter running for at least 8 hours, ideally overnight, to circulate the shock and pull the dead debris out of the water. If you are treating algae, brushing the walls and floor while the chlorine is high dramatically speeds the kill and stirs up spores hiding in corners.
Do not swim on a freshly shocked pool. Wait until your free chlorine drops back to a safe 1–4 ppm and pH is back in range — then it is swimmable. With a chlorine shock that is usually the next day; with non-chlorine MPS it can be as little as 15 minutes. The test kit is what tells you it is truly safe, not the clock.
Shocking a green or algae-filled pool
A green pool is a shock job on hard mode. Algae multiplies faster than a normal dose can keep up with, so you need a heavy, sustained hit: balance the water, then shock at double or triple strength, brush aggressively, and keep the filter running around the clock. Expect the water to turn cloudy gray or white as the algae dies — that is progress, not failure. Do this, not that
- Shock in the evening, pump running.
- Balance pH before you dose.
- Pre-dissolve on vinyl liners.
- Retest and wait for a safe level before swimming.
- Mix shock with any other chemical.
- Toss dry granules across a vinyl pool.
- Shock at midday in full sun.
- Assume “more product” clears water faster.
How soon can you swim?
It comes down to the type you used and the number on your test kit. After a chlorine shock, wait until free chlorine falls back to 1–4 ppm — typically 8 to 24 hours, and faster if the pool is in the sun the next day. After a non-chlorine (MPS) shock, you can usually swim in about 15 minutes. Either way, the rule is the same: the test kit decides, not the clock. When both chlorine and pH read in range, the water is ready.
Shocking is not complicated once you see it for what it is — a big, well-timed oxidizer dose that resets water your daily chlorine cannot keep clean on its own. Match the product to the problem, respect the handling rules, add it at dusk, and let the filter finish the work.
