Pool Heater Maintenance: How to Add Years to a Gas Heater or Heat Pump

The heater is the most expensive box on your equipment pad, and the one most owners fuss over least. The pump gets cleaned every week, the filter gets backwashed on schedule, and the heater sits there ignored until the morning it fires up, rattles, and quits. Here is the part that stings: most heaters do not die of old age. They die young, from a handful of things that were completely preventable.

A gas heater or heat pump that is looked after can run fifteen or twenty seasons. One that is neglected can be scrap in five. The good news is that heater maintenance is not complicated, and almost none of it happens inside the heater. It happens in your water, on your equipment pad, and in a few ten-minute habits a couple of times a year. This is how to build them.

The heart of the heater — and what actually kills it

Whether you run gas or a heat pump, the piece doing the work is the heat exchanger: a bundle of metal tubes (usually copper, sometimes cupro-nickel or titanium) that transfers heat into the water rushing past it. Replace that one part and you have spent a large fraction of what a whole new heater costs. So heater care is really heat-exchanger care, and there are only three things that wreck it.

Scale — hard, mineral crust that plates onto the tubes from unbalanced water. It insulates the metal, so the burner works harder, runs hotter, and eventually cracks or clogs the exchanger.

Corrosion — the opposite problem. Water that is too soft or too acidic eats the copper from the inside, thinning the tubes until they leak.

Starved airflow or water flow — a heater that cannot get enough water through it, or a heat pump that cannot breathe, overheats, short-cycles, and stresses every component it has.

Notice that two of the three are chemistry, not mechanics. That is why the single most valuable thing you can do for a heater never involves touching the heater at all.

Start with the water, not the heater

Balanced water is heater maintenance. When your pH, alkalinity, and calcium hardness all sit in range, the water is neutral — it neither drops scale onto the tubes nor pulls metal out of them. When they drift, the heat exchanger is the first thing to pay for it, because it is the hottest surface in the whole system and heat accelerates both scaling and corrosion.

Keep pH in the 7.4 to 7.6 zone, alkalinity around 80 to 120 ppm, and calcium where it belongs for your pool's surface. Acidic water (low pH) is especially hard on copper, so if you tend to run low, correct it before you run the heater hard. If you have hard fill water, or you spot metals in your source water, a stain & scale preventer (a sequestrant) is cheap insurance. It grabs onto dissolved calcium and metals and holds them in solution, so they stop plating out as crust on the hottest surface in the loop. Dose it at startup and top it up through the season, and you take the number-one heater killer off the table.

Give it the flow it was designed for

A heater is engineered to have a specific amount of water moving through it. Too little flow and the water in the exchanger overheats between passes; that is what triggers the high-limit switch, the short-cycling, and the long-term thermal stress. So plumbing housekeeping is heater housekeeping: keep the pump basket and skimmer baskets clean, keep the filter from clogging, and make sure any diverter valves on the pad are actually sending enough water through the heater. Most modern heaters also have an internal bypass — a spring-loaded valve inside the header that diverts a portion of the flow around the exchanger so the tubes are not blasted with more water (or more pressure) than they can handle. It is a genuine wear part. When the bypass poppet, spring, or seat fails, you get erratic heating, high back-pressure, or premature exchanger wear, and it is a far cheaper fix than the exchanger it protects. If yours is original and the heater is getting on in years, it is worth checking the next time the header is open.

If you run a gas heater

Gas heaters have their own short list of enemies, and most of them are about what gets inside the cabinet. The warm, sheltered box is a magnet for wildlife — mice, wasps, ants, and spiders nest in it over the off-season and chew wiring or clog the burner tray and orifices. A quick look inside every spring, and again if the heater has sat unused for a while, heads off a surprising number of no-heat and won't-ignite calls.

Keep the area around the heater clear so it can vent properly: no stacked pool floats, no bags of chemical leaning against the cabinet, and nothing growing up against the exhaust. Pool chemicals stored next to a heater are a real problem — chlorine and acid fumes corrode the burner, the exchanger, and the control board astonishingly fast, so store them somewhere else entirely. Wipe soot or rust dust off the burner tray, and if the flame ever looks lazy and yellow instead of crisp and blue, treat that as a service flag rather than something to ignore.

If you run a heat pump

A heat pump does not burn anything — it pulls warmth out of the outside air the way an air conditioner works in reverse — so its maintenance is different. The key word is airflow. A heat pump breathes through the finned coil that wraps its cabinet, and if that coil is packed with leaves, grass clippings, cottonwood fluff, or dryer-lint-style buildup, the unit cannot pull heat from the air and its efficiency falls off a cliff.

Two or three times a season, kill the power and gently rinse the coil fins from the inside out with a garden hose (never a pressure washer — the fins bend easily). Keep shrubs, fences, and stacked gear at least a couple of feet back on all sides so air can move freely, and make sure the fan on top is never blocked. Check that the condensate drain at the base stays clear; a heat pump makes a steady trickle of water when it runs, and that is normal, not a leak. Finally, respect the temperature floor: most heat pumps lose efficiency below roughly 50°F ambient and are not meant to run in freezing weather, so they are a shoulder-season and warm-climate tool, not a January one.

A simple seasonal rhythm

You do not need a maintenance calendar full of tasks. Three checkpoints a year cover almost everything:

When Do this
Spring start-up Balance the water first. Look inside a gas cabinet for nests and debris; rinse a heat pump coil. Fire it up and watch the first full cycle for clean ignition and steady heat.
Mid-season Keep the water balanced and the filter clean so flow stays strong. Re-rinse a heat pump coil during heavy pollen or grass season. Listen for new rattles or a lazy flame.
Off-season shutdown Turn off the gas or power. Drain the heater so no water freezes inside the exchanger. Cap or cover it to keep out weather and critters, but never seal a gas heater airtight.

That freeze point deserves a bold line of its own: water left sitting in a heat exchanger over a hard winter can freeze, expand, and crack it — one of the most common and most avoidable ways an otherwise healthy heater dies. Repair or replace?

When a well-kept heater finally acts up, the failure is usually a serviceable part — an igniter, a sensor, a pressure switch, a control board, a bypass. Those are worth fixing, often for a small fraction of a new unit, and many are do-it-yourself jobs. The moment to think about replacement is when the heat exchanger itself has failed: a cracked or badly scaled exchanger on an older heater can cost so much that a new, more efficient unit is the smarter money — especially if the old one was undersized to begin with. The payoff

Add it up and heater maintenance is almost embarrassingly simple: keep the water balanced, keep water and air flowing freely, keep the cabinet clear, and drain it before the freeze. None of that takes special tools, and most of it you are already half-doing to keep the rest of the pool running. Do it, and the most expensive box on your pad quietly becomes the one you never think about — which, for a heater, is exactly the point.
