Up-Rated vs Full-Rated
The UST1102 is up-rated, the nameplate horsepower (1.0 HP) plus service factor headroom (0.10 SF) equals about 1.10 total HP. Pump manufacturers spec up-rated motors for residential pools because the same physical motor can be sold at a lower HP rating for cost. For a full-rated 1.0 HP motor at this frame, see the URS1102.
Wiring 115V vs 230V
Follow the wiring diagram on the motor end cap. Set the voltage jumper inside the conduit box to match your service. Always disconnect at the breaker and verify zero voltage before opening the conduit cover. Bond the motor to the pool equipotential grid per NEC 680.
Should I switch to a variable-speed motor?
Yes if your state requires it (CA, FL, AZ, several others mandate variable speed on most replacements) or if you run the pump more than 4 hours a day. A VS motor pays back the price premium in 2 to 3 seasons through reduced kWh. For pure replacement on a low-cycle pool or per code grandfathering, the UST1102 is the lowest-friction swap.
