How do I find the right O-ring for my pool filter?
Pool filter O-rings are model-specific — the correct O-ring is determined by your filter's exact model number, not just the brand or filter type. Start by locating your filter's model number on the label on the tank body or the filter head. Then look up the part number for the specific O-ring location you need (tank lid, tank body, diffuser, etc.) — these are listed in your filter's owner's manual or available in the manufacturer's online parts diagrams. Common tank lid O-rings in this collection include the Hayward S220 body O-ring (O-103), Hayward StarClear II lid (O-366), and Pentair/Sta-Rite tank body O-rings. If you can't find the manual, contact our team with your model number and we'll identify the correct part. How often should DE filter grids be replaced?
DE filter grids should be replaced when the fabric shows holes, tears, or significant fabric degradation that allows DE powder to pass through into the pool. Visually inspect grids every time you open the filter for seasonal cleaning — typically once per year. Grids in good condition can last 5–10 years with proper maintenance; grids in pools with heavy chemical use or frequent backwashing may need replacement sooner. Signs that DE grids need replacement: DE powder is visible in the pool after re-coating ("blowing DE"); pressure rises faster than normal after backwashing; or you can visibly see tears, holes, or ballooned fabric when grids are removed and rinsed. Replace the entire grid set at once — mismatched old and new grids create uneven flow distribution inside the filter.
My multiport valve is leaking — should I repair or replace it?
A leaking multiport valve (MPV) is usually caused by a worn spider gasket inside the valve, or by cracked valve body housing. The spider gasket — the star-shaped rubber seal that routes water between valve positions — degrades over time and causes water to bypass or leak between positions. Spider gaskets can be replaced individually for around $15–$30, making it a cost-effective repair if the valve body is otherwise in good condition. If the valve body is cracked, brittle, or the handle mechanism is damaged, full valve replacement is the better option. When replacing, verify thread size (1.5" or 2") and number of valve positions (6 or 8) match your existing setup.
What lubricant should I use on pool filter O-rings?
Always use 100% pure silicone lubricant (such as Magic Lube or similar pool-grade silicone grease) on pool filter O-rings. Apply a thin, even coat to the O-ring's outer surface before reinstalling — enough to make it appear shiny and slippery without excess buildup. Silicone lubricant prevents the O-ring from drying out and cracking and makes assembly easier without risking damage. Never use petroleum-based lubricants (Vaseline, WD-40, cooking oil) on rubber O-rings — petroleum products cause rapid rubber swelling and degradation, which will make the O-ring leak worse within a few days.
