Pool Light Not Working? How to Troubleshoot It Safely

A dark pool light feels like a job for a professional — it is underwater, it is wired to your house, and nobody wants to guess wrong around a pool. Here is the reassuring part: the large majority of “dead” pool lights come down to three ordinary culprits — a tripped GFCI, a burned-out bulb, or a flooded fixture — and all three are things a careful owner can check and fix in an afternoon.

This guide works from the cheapest, safest checks toward the more involved ones, so you rule out the easy things before you ever pick up a screwdriver. We will cover what to look at first, how to safely bring the fixture up out of the water to service it, the parts that usually fail, and the clear line where the job stops being DIY and becomes a call to an electrician.

Before you touch anything: most pool lights run on 120-volt house current, and they sit in water. Switch the light circuit off at the breaker and confirm the GFCI has cut power before you open a fixture, and never handle a light, the lens, or the wiring while the circuit is live or while anyone is in the pool. Water plus line voltage is genuinely dangerous. If a step below moves past changing a bulb, a gasket, or the fixture itself — or if the GFCI refuses to stay reset — stop and call a licensed pool electrician.

Start where the power starts

Before you assume the light is broken, prove that power is actually reaching it. Two free checks catch a surprising number of “failures.”

Check the GFCI. Pool lights are required to run on a ground-fault circuit interrupter, and a GFCI trips for a reason. Find the GFCI — it may be a button on the light’s wall switch, an outlet near the equipment pad, or a breaker in the panel — and press reset. If it clicks back on and the light works, you are done. If it will not reset, or it trips again the moment you reset it, do not keep forcing it: that is the fixture telling you there is water or a fault inside, which we deal with below.

Check the breaker, timer, and automation. Many pool lights run through a mechanical timer or an automation system, not a simple switch. A light that seems dead is often just “off” on its schedule, or on a breaker that quietly tripped. Confirm the circuit is on and that whatever controls it — timer trippers, a wall switch, or an app — is actually calling for the light.

Bring the light up — you do not need to drain the pool

This is the part that surprises new owners: pool lights are built to be serviced without lowering the water. The fixture is wound with a long, coiled cord tucked behind it in the niche for exactly this reason. With the power confirmed off, remove the single screw at the top of the face ring (usually a Phillips or a hex screw), and the fixture lifts out of its niche. Uncoil the cord and set the light on the deck on a dry towel where you can work on it.

Take a good look before you open anything. A lens fogged with condensation or visibly holding water, a crumbling gasket, a cracked lens, or a corroded, rusty face ring all point you straight to the cause.

The bulb: the most common real failure

If power is good and the fixture looks dry, the bulb is the usual suspect. Standard incandescent pool bulbs simply burn out over time; LED bulbs and light engines last far longer but do eventually fail. Open the fixture per your light’s manual, and note one critical detail before you buy a replacement: voltage.

Pool lights in the US are either 120-volt (wired straight to house current) or low-voltage 12-volt (fed through a transformer at the equipment pad). A quick way to tell: if there is a transformer near your pump and filter, you are almost certainly on 12 volts. Match the replacement bulb’s voltage and wattage to what came out — a 120-volt bulb will not work on a 12-volt system, and mixing them is unsafe. When in doubt, read the label on the old bulb or the fixture.

Reassemble with a fresh lens gasket while you have it open (more on that next), seat the lens evenly, and hand-tighten the clamp so the seal is even all the way around.

Water in the fixture: fix the seal, not just the bulb

If the lens was fogged or full of water, the bulb did not fail on its own — the lens gasket did. That gasket is the only thing keeping pool water out of a live electrical fixture, and a hardened or torn one lets water seep in, which shorts the bulb and, often, trips the GFCI. Replacing the bulb without replacing the gasket just floods the new bulb too.

Dry the fixture completely, fit a fresh lens gasket sized for your exact light, and reassemble. Buy the gasket that matches your brand and model — a seal that is even slightly off will leak again.

Corroded face ring, clamp, or lens

Years underwater are hard on the metal parts. A rusted or pitted face ring will not clamp the lens down evenly, and a cracked lens is an open door for water. If the sealing surfaces are corroded, replacing just the gasket will not hold — you need to rebuild the sealing hardware. A face-ring kit with a matched clamp and gasket restores a clean, even seal in one part.

When the fixture itself is done

Sometimes the housing is corroded through, the cord is cracked or brittle, or the light simply is not worth chasing part by part. That is the moment to replace the whole fixture — and it is the perfect time to move up to LED. A modern LED pool light draws a fraction of the wattage of an old incandescent, lasts far longer, and many offer color options. One caution on a full fixture swap: pulling the old light and dropping in a new one is straightforward, but the final connection lives in the junction box, where the light cord ties into your house wiring. If you are not fully comfortable working in that box with the power confirmed dead, hand that last step to a pro. It is a small cost for peace of mind around a pooled circuit.

Where DIY ends and an electrician begins

Changing a bulb, a gasket, a face ring, or a whole fixture is well within reach for a hands-on owner. A few situations, though, are firmly in licensed-electrician territory, and there is no shame in calling one — pools and electricity are the wrong place to improvise:

  • The GFCI trips again the instant you reset it, even with the bulb out.
  • There is no power at the switch or junction box when the circuit is on.
  • You find damaged conduit, scorched wiring, or a questionable ground or bond.
  • Anything about the junction-box wiring makes you hesitate.

The bottom line

A pool light that has gone dark is usually a small fix, not a big one. Start with the GFCI, the breaker, and the timer; bring the fixture up onto the deck; and work through the bulb, the gasket, and the face ring in that order.
