Pool skimmer basket replacement on a daylight deck

How to Replace a Pool Skimmer Basket

A pool skimmer basket is the most-replaced part on any pool — it sees daily UV, debris loading, and freeze-thaw cycles. A cracked basket lets debris through to the pump where it can damage the impeller. Replacement is a 30-second job once you have the right basket.

When to replace

  • Cracks anywhere on the basket walls or base.
  • Broken handle (the basket falls into the skimmer when you try to lift it).
  • Missing or stripped support tabs at the top.
  • Brittle plastic that flexes more than it should.
  • Basket is more than 7–10 years old (UV degradation).

Identifying your basket

Skimmer baskets aren’t universal. Common residential families:

  • Hayward Auto-Skim (SP1084, SP1085, SP1080): uses SPX1080E basket.
  • Hayward Wide-Track: uses SPX1082C basket (larger).
  • Pentair Bermuda/Admiral: uses 516112 or similar generic.
  • Jacuzzi/Carvin: uses 43-0508-04 or 43-0508-08 (oval baskets).
  • Custom Molded Products: the 25300-000-040 standard above-ground basket.

How to identify yours

The model number is often molded into the underside of the basket itself. If not, look at the skimmer body (the skimmer model is usually printed near the top edge inside the cavity).

Step-by-step

1Turn the pump off.

Don’t open the skimmer while water is being pulled through it.

2Remove the skimmer lid.

Lift straight up.

3Lift the old basket out.

Grasp the handle and lift straight up. If the handle is broken, fish the basket out with a long pole.

4Inspect the skimmer body.

With the basket out, take 30 seconds to inspect the inside of the skimmer for cracks, debris stuck in the suction line, or a damaged weir hinge.

5Drop the new basket in.

Make sure the support tabs land on the corresponding ledges inside the skimmer body. The basket should sit flat with the handle vertical.

6Replace the lid and restart the pump.

Keep a spare on the shelf

Skimmer baskets are inexpensive and high-failure-rate. Order two when you order one — the spare lives in the garage until the next crack appears. Total cost is under $50 and you avoid a mid-summer emergency parts run.

If you’re not sure which basket matches your skimmer, send PST Pool Supplies a photo of the existing basket (broken or whole) and we’ll match the right replacement.
