Pool pump motors look identical from the outside. Brand stickers fade. Owners assume their pump needs a same-brand replacement and pay 30–50% extra. The truth: 90% of residential pool pump motors are made by two manufacturers (A.O. Smith / Century and Regal Beloit / EMG) and are cross-compatible across pump brands. Knowing how to read the cross-reference saves real money on every replacement.
The four specs that determine cross-compatibility
For one motor to drop in where another one came out, four things must match:
- Frame size — 48Y or 56Y (square flange or round flange).
- Total HP (HP × service factor). A 1.0 HP SF 1.65 motor matches a 1.65 HP SF 1.0 motor.
- Voltage — 115V, 230V, or dual-voltage. Always match or step UP.
- Shaft type — threaded (most residential) or keyed (some larger commercial). Threaded is by far more common.
Get all four right and the new motor bolts onto the existing wet end with no plumbing changes.
Common cross-references
Most major pump bodies accept multiple motor brands. A few popular examples:
- Hayward Super Pump (SP2607X10) — takes Hayward SPX1610Z1M, A.O. Smith UST1102, Century UST1102. All 1 HP, 48Y frame, dual-voltage.
- Pentair Whisperflo (WFE-6) — takes Pentair AO Smith B2854, A.O. Smith B2854, Century B2854. All 1 HP, 56Y frame.
- Sta-Rite Dura-Glas/Max-E-Glas (P2RA5F-181L) — takes Sta-Rite EAP2 1.5HP, A.O. Smith Q1152, Century UQC1152. All 1.5 HP, 48Y frame.
The OEM motor and the A.O. Smith / Century equivalent share identical bolt holes, shaft diameter, and electrical specs. The only differences are stickers and warranty terms.

If your pump is from a brand that’s gone out of business or used a proprietary motor mount, the cross-reference may not exist — in which case you replace the whole pump rather than the motor. The line between “swap the motor” and “replace the whole thing” is usually 15-year-old equipment. Anything newer almost always has an A.O. Smith or Regal cross.
Send PST Pool Supplies a photo of your existing motor data plate, and we’ll point you to the right cross-reference — usually a $50–$200 savings over the OEM-branded version.
