Pool automation systems turn a pad full of timers and switches into a phone-controlled, schedule-driven setup that runs itself. Modern automation also reduces operating cost by running the pump only when needed, controls salt cell output dynamically, and turns on heaters before you arrive at the pool. Here’s how to pick the right automation for your pool.

What automation actually controls

• Pool pump (on/off, RPM speeds on variable-speed pumps)
• Salt chlorine generator output
• Pool heater (turn on/off, target temperature)
• Pool lights
• Spa jets and blowers
• Waterfalls and water features
• Valve actuators (for switching between pool and spa)

The three major automation ecosystems

1. Jandy AquaLink (Zodiac)

The most installed residential automation in North America. Robust, well-supported, and works with any Jandy pump, heater, or salt cell. Excellent third-party device compatibility. Phone app is functional but not flashy. Mid-range pricing.

2. Pentair IntelliCenter

Pentair’s flagship automation. Best polish and the most modern app experience. Integrates tightly with Pentair IntelliFlo VS pumps, IntelliChlor salt cells, and Master Temp heaters. Premium pricing.

3. Hayward OmniLogic

Hayward’s automation. Strong if you have Hayward equipment. Solid app. Slightly more complicated initial setup than competitors.

Mid-tier and basic options

• Jandy Aqualink RS or Z4: mid-tier system with most of the AquaLink functionality at lower cost.
• Standalone variable-speed pump app control: if you don’t need to control anything but the pump, a VS pump with built-in WiFi is the cheapest entry point.
• Smart timers (e.g., Intermatic): the cheapest automation. Replaces a mechanical timer with a scheduler. No remote control, no integration with other equipment.

The hidden cost: brand lock-in

Once you install Jandy AquaLink, you’ll find yourself buying Jandy pumps, heaters, and salt cells — they communicate cleanly together. Mixing brands works for basic on/off but loses dashboard features. Pick the ecosystem when you’re installing your first major piece of equipment.
