Smart pool timer and automation parts on a daylight equipment pad

Best Smart Pool Timer Buyer's Guide

A smart pool timer is the cheapest way to automate basic pool operation. Unlike full automation systems ($1,500+), a smart timer ($150–$400) controls just the pump and a few accessories — perfect for owners who want app control without rewiring the equipment pad.

What a smart timer does

  • Replaces the mechanical Intermatic timer most pools have at the pad.
  • Schedules the pump with daily and weekly variation.
  • Phone app control from anywhere.
  • Some support multiple circuits: pump + heater + light.
  • Optional integration with home automation (Alexa, Google Home).

The three smart timer approaches

1. Dedicated pool smart timer

Hayward Smart Pad, Pentair EasyTouch (basic), and Intermatic PE600. Designed specifically for pool pump applications. Often include freeze protection (turn pump on automatically below 35°F to prevent freeze damage).

2. Variable-speed pump with built-in WiFi

Modern VS pumps include scheduling and remote control from the manufacturer’s app. If you’re replacing a pump anyway, this is the cheapest path to smart control.

3. Generic smart switches (NOT recommended)

You might think a smart wall switch would do this. Most don’t — they aren’t rated for the inductive load of a pool pump motor. Use only timers and switches rated specifically for pool pump duty.

Heater control and fireman switches

If you have a gas heater, install a fireman switch alongside your timer. The fireman switch turns the heater off BEFORE the pump turns off, allowing residual water flow to cool the heat exchanger. Skipping this damages the heater.

What to look for in a smart timer

  • Pool-pump-rated load capacity (typically 20A at 240V).
  • Freeze protection built-in.
  • Multiple schedules (weekday vs weekend, summer vs winter).
  • Manual override on the device itself (not app-only).
  • WiFi or RS-485 for full integration if you plan to scale up to full automation later.
