Pool main drain entrapment incidents are rare but devastating. The Virginia Graeme Baker (VGB) Pool & Spa Safety Act requires anti-entrapment drain covers on all public pools, and the same VGB-compliant covers are available — and strongly recommended — for residential pools. Here’s how to pick the right one.
Why drain covers matter
A flat or damaged drain cover can create dangerous suction that traps a swimmer underwater. Anti-entrapment covers are domed or grated in patterns that prevent a swimmer’s body from fully sealing the drain opening, which keeps suction from concentrating dangerously.
VGB-compliant covers are stamped with their compliance rating, flow capacity, and an expiration date. Most are rated for 5–7 years of use before they need replacement — UV degradation makes plastic brittle over time.
The two types of safety-rated drain covers
1. Anti-vortex (round) covers
Domed covers with multiple intake slots. Easy retrofit for most existing round drains. Some require minor concrete work to fit; most simply unscrew the old cover and screw on the new one.
2. Channel drains
Long narrow drains running along the deep-end floor. Massively higher flow area means lower suction velocity — even if a swimmer covered part of the drain, the channel design prevents lethal suction concentration. The most modern and safest design; required for new pool construction in some jurisdictions.

An anti-entrapment drain cover plus a Safety Vacuum Release System (SVRS) is the best-practice combination for any residential pool. The cover prevents most entrapment scenarios; the SVRS cuts pump power within a second if entrapment ever occurs anyway. See our toddler safety guide for the full layered approach.
