Pool skimmer weir door replacement on a daylight deck

How to Replace a Pool Skimmer Weir Door

The weir door is the floating flap inside the skimmer mouth that holds water back to create surface tension for skimming. When it’s stuck open, you lose surface tension and the skimmer pulls debris poorly. When it’s stuck closed, water can’t enter and the pump starves. Replacing it is a 10-minute job.

How the weir door works

Inside your skimmer’s entrance is a small plastic flap mounted on a hinge pin. When water flow draws the flap open, water rushes in over the top of the flap. The flap floats just below the water surface, creating a damming effect that pulls a thin layer of surface water into the skimmer.

When to replace

  • Flap is missing entirely (broken at the hinge).
  • Flap is cracked or warped and won’t float properly.
  • Hinge is broken or seized.
  • You see surface debris (leaves, bugs) sitting just outside the skimmer instead of being pulled in.

Step-by-step

1Turn the pump off.

Don’t reach into a skimmer while water is being pulled through it.

2Remove the skimmer lid and basket.

You’re now looking down at the weir flap from above.

3Locate the hinge pin.

The weir door pivots on a small plastic or stainless steel pin near the entrance. Some pins are removable from above; others slide out from the side of the skimmer body.

4Pull the hinge pin and remove the weir door.

Use needle-nose pliers if the pin is tight. The weir door lifts straight out once the pin is removed.

5Insert the new weir door.

Match the make and model exactly — weir doors aren’t universal. Most parts catalogs cross-reference by skimmer model number printed inside the body.

6Reinstall the hinge pin.

Press the pin in by hand or tap gently with the back of a screwdriver. Don’t hammer.

7Verify the door floats and moves freely.

Push the door manually with your finger; it should pivot smoothly and return to vertical when released.

8Reinstall basket and lid, restart pump.

Restart and watch the skimmer entrance. You should see water flowing over the top of the door with the door floating just below the water surface.

Complete skimmer replacement options

If the skimmer body itself is cracked or the weir hinge is broken at the molded mount, you may need to replace the whole skimmer assembly:

Send PST Pool Supplies a photo of your skimmer with the cover off and we’ll match the right weir door or full skimmer replacement.
