Pool skimmer with new replacement lid on a daylight deck

How To Replace a Pool Skimmer Lid

A cracked skimmer lid is the most-tripped-on hazard on a pool deck. It’s also a $20–$40 fix that takes 5 minutes — assuming you order the right shape and size. This tutorial walks through replacing a skimmer lid on a residential pool.

When to replace

  • Any visible crack, chip, or break.
  • Lid doesn’t sit flat or wobbles.
  • Color faded so badly the trip hazard is more dangerous (white lids show fewer trip warnings than dark ones).
  • Lid is missing entirely (yes, this is more common than you’d think).

Identifying your lid

Skimmer lids come in three main shapes:

  • Square lids — most common on Hayward and Pentair residential skimmers.
  • Round lids — older Hayward, some Sta-Rite, many spas.
  • Oval / oblong lids — wide-track and commercial skimmers.

To order the right replacement, measure the lid:

  1. Outside diameter (longest dimension) of the lid.
  2. Lid thickness.
  3. Note the manufacturer name if printed on the underside (Hayward, Pentair, etc.).

Generic-fit lids are available for most popular skimmer sizes and cost 30–50% less than OEM-branded versions. For the most popular Hayward Auto-Skim and Wide-Track lines, replacement lids are standard inventory.

Step-by-step replacement

1Remove the old lid.

Lift straight up — lids are not screwed in. If the lid is fused in by years of pool chemicals or cracked plaster, pry gently with a flat screwdriver at the edge.

2Clean the lid seat.

Wipe out the seat where the lid rests on the skimmer body. Remove leaves, dirt, and any broken plastic from the old lid.

3Inspect the gasket / o-ring (if present).

Some skimmer lids have a rubber o-ring that seals against the lid seat. Replace if cracked or flat. Apply a thin film of silicone pool lubricant.

4Drop the new lid in place.

Make sure it sits flat all the way around. If it rocks, you have the wrong size — do not force-fit a lid that doesn’t lay flush.

5Test for wobble and clearance.

Step on the lid lightly — it should sit solid. A wobbly lid is a trip hazard.

Common upgrade: switch to a heavy-duty lid

If your old lid cracked from foot traffic, consider upgrading to a thicker, reinforced lid. Hayward’s newer Auto-Skim lids are rated for higher load and resist UV degradation better than the legacy white lids that come on older pools.

Color match tip: if your existing pool deck has multiple skimmer lids and you’re replacing just one, replace them all to match. Mismatched lid colors look obvious from any angle on the pool deck.
