Replacing the motor on a Hayward Super Pump is one of the cheapest, highest-payoff pool repairs you can do. The Super Pump uses a standard A.O. Smith 48Y-frame motor, and a $300–$400 motor swap saves the $1,200+ cost of a whole new pump. Here’s the brand-specific tutorial.
Common Super Pump motor model numbers
Match the existing nameplate to one of these common Super Pump motor codes:
- 1.0 HP, 115/230V, 48Y: SPX1610Z1M / Century UST1102 / A.O. Smith UST1102
- 1.5 HP, 115/230V, 48Y: SPX1615Z1M / Century UST1152 / A.O. Smith UST1152
- 2.0 HP, 230V, 48Y: SPX1620Z1M / Century UST1202 / A.O. Smith UST1202
The Hayward-branded part and the Century/A.O. Smith equivalent are identical — same shaft, same bolt holes, same wiring diagram. Buying the Century version saves $50–$150.
What you’ll need
- The matched replacement motor
- A new shaft seal kit (SPX1600Z2 for Super Pump)
- A new pump body o-ring
- Silicone pool lubricant
- 3/8″ socket wrench
- Strap wrench
Step-by-step
Open both drain plugs (one on each side of the pump body).
3/8″ socket. Loosen in star pattern.
You’ll see the impeller exposed.
Use a strap wrench around the impeller; hold motor shaft from behind.
Stationary half into seal plate (polished face out); rotating half onto impeller hub.
Clockwise. Hand-tight only.
Always replace. Lubricate with silicone.
