Above-ground pool spring opening supplies on a daylight deck

How to Open an Above Ground Pool for Spring

Opening an above-ground pool for spring takes about 3 hours of work and gets you swim-ready water within a week if you follow the steps in order. Above-ground pools are simpler than in-ground but have a few unique considerations — thin-wall pumps, vinyl liner protection, and weight loading from cover removal. Here’s the full checklist.

Before removing the cover

  1. Pump standing water off the cover with a cover pump or wet-dry vac.
  2. Skim leaves and debris off the top of the cover.
  3. Hose-rinse the top of the cover to wash off dirt and algae.

Step-by-step

1Remove the cover.

Pull from one end, folding accordion-style. Have a second person help on larger pools. Spread on grass, hose down, let dry before storing.

2Skim leaves and debris floating in the pool.

Get everything floating before starting equipment.

3Top off water to the middle of the skimmer.

Fill with a garden hose. Above-ground pools sit 6–12 inches below the skimmer at closing.

4Reinstall equipment.

Reinstall pump drain plugs. Reconnect the pressure gauge. Replace any freeze plugs in returns and skimmer with eyeball fittings. Inspect every o-ring and replace cracked ones with new ones from PST.

5Prime the pump.

Fill the pump strainer pot through the lid. See our priming tutorial. Above-ground pumps prime quickly when the water level is correct.

6Run system 24 hours before testing chemistry.

Stagnant water needs full mixing before any test reading is meaningful.

7Test all six parameters and balance in order.

Alkalinity, then pH, then calcium hardness, then stabilizer (lower target for above-ground pools), then shock.

8Brush the entire pool surface.

Use a soft nylon brush for vinyl liners — never stainless steel. Brush walls and floor thoroughly.

9Vacuum any settled debris.

If the pool has a lot of bottom debris, vacuum to WASTE rather than FILTER to avoid loading the filter. Top off water as you vacuum.

10Add clarifier and run pump 24/7 for 48 hours.

Polymer clarifier helps the filter capture fine debris.

Above-ground specific opening tips

  • Inspect the liner. Run your hand along the liner for tears, weak seams, or stretched areas. Patch tiny tears immediately; large damage may mean a liner replacement.
  • Check the wall for rust or holes. Above-ground metal walls oxidize from the inside. Pinhole leaks at the base of the wall mean water has been wicking through.
  • Brush the liner with a soft brush only. Stainless bristles damage vinyl.
  • Check the skimmer faceplate seal. Vinyl liner pools have a rubber gasket between the skimmer and the liner. Replace at the first sign of leaking.
