Pool Skimmers for Inground & Above-Ground Pools

Replace or upgrade your pool's surface skimmer with a pool skimmer from Hayward, CMP, Pentair, Waterway, Aladdin, and Balboa. PST Pool Supplies stocks complete skimmer assemblies for every pool type — vinyl liner inground, concrete/gunite inground, fiberglass inground, and above-ground pools — starting from $28.70.

Skimmers are pool-type specific, so selecting the correct model is critical. Vinyl liner skimmers from CMP (Custom Molded Products) are available in standard (25160-110-000, white), deluxe (25160-110-200 and 25160-010-200), and wide-mouth (25160-111-100, gray) configurations — vinyl liner skimmers are designed to install through the pool liner, which is stretched over the skimmer face plate and trimmed, then covered with the faceplate ring to create a watertight seal. The Hayward SP1091LX vinyl liner skimmer includes an accessory pak and is one of the most widely installed vinyl pool skimmers in North America. The Waterway Renegade fiberglass skimmer is designed for fiberglass pool installations with the specific body shape needed for fiberglass pool walls. The Hayward SkimMaster is a concrete/gunite pool skimmer for inground pools without liners. The Pentair Bermuda inground skimmer (multiple variants) is another concrete pool standard. The generic SP1099-compatible front access skimmer is a direct replacement for pools using the common SP1099-style front-access design. The Aladdin no-niche skimmer provides an above-deck installation option. For skimmer baskets, hose adapters, and other skimmer components, see our skimmer parts collection.

A skimmer replacement is typically needed when the existing skimmer body cracks (due to freeze damage or UV degradation), when a liner pool is re-lined and the old skimmer cannot seal properly to the new liner, or when upgrading from a single-port to a two-port skimmer that offers a dedicated vacuum port separate from the main suction line. When selecting a replacement skimmer for a vinyl liner pool, the body dimensions and faceplate footprint must match the existing wall cutout — a skimmer body slightly larger or smaller than the existing opening will not seal correctly with the liner. Measure the existing skimmer's faceplate length, width, and the wall opening dimensions before ordering.

Frequently Asked Questions

What type of pool skimmer do I need for a vinyl liner pool?
Vinyl liner pools require a vinyl liner skimmer — a specific skimmer body design that accommodates the pool liner being stretched over the skimmer face and trimmed. The liner installation process: the skimmer body is set into the pool wall cutout, the pool liner is hung and filled with enough water to pull it taut against all surfaces, then the liner is cut over the skimmer opening and the faceplate ring is screwed down over the liner to create a watertight compression seal. If the skimmer body is the wrong size for the wall cutout, the liner will not seal correctly. CMP vinyl liner skimmers (25160-110-000, deluxe, wide-mouth variants) and the Hayward SP1091LX are purpose-built for this installation. When replacing a vinyl liner skimmer — particularly during a re-liner — measure the existing skimmer's faceplate outer dimensions and the wall opening carefully before ordering. A standard-mouth skimmer opening is approximately 8"×10" while a wide-mouth opening provides greater surface water collection area.
How do I know when my pool skimmer needs to be replaced?
Pool skimmers typically need replacement for these reasons: (1) Cracked or broken skimmer body — UV degradation, age, or freeze damage (water in the skimmer that freezes and expands) cracks the ABS plastic body; a cracked body leaks water into the surrounding soil and loses suction. (2) Re-lining a vinyl liner pool — when a vinyl liner is replaced, the liner installer will cut the new liner over the skimmer opening; if the existing skimmer body is old, cracked, or the faceplate gasket is degraded, replacement of the entire skimmer body is often done at the same time as the re-liner while the pool is empty. (3) Cracked or missing skimmer throat/weir — the weir (floating flap) keeps debris in the basket when the pump cycles off; if it breaks and cannot be sourced as a part, skimmer replacement may be necessary. (4) Leaking skimmer-to-pipe connection — if the underground plumbing connection at the skimmer base is leaking and cannot be accessed for repair, replacement may be the only solution.
What is the difference between a front-access and top-access pool skimmer?
A top-access skimmer (the most common type) has the basket accessible from above — you lift the deck-level lid, then reach down to remove the basket. The lid sits flush with or slightly above the pool deck. This design is standard for virtually all residential inground pool skimmers (Hayward SP1070/SP1091, Pentair Bermuda, CMP vinyl liner skimmers). A front-access skimmer (SP1099 style and equivalents) has the basket accessible through a door in the vertical face of the skimmer body at the pool wall — the pool wall has a rectangular access panel rather than a deck-top lid. Front-access skimmers were more common in older pools and in installations where deck space is minimal. They are less convenient to service (you must reach into the pool wall rather than bending down at deck level) but keep the pool deck surface clean of skimmer lids. When replacing a front-access skimmer, the replacement body must match the existing wall opening dimensions exactly — front-access models are not interchangeable with top-access designs.
What is a skimmer weir and why is it important?
The skimmer weir is the floating hinged flap located in the skimmer throat (the opening between the pool and the skimmer basket). When the pool pump is running, the water flow pushes the weir to a near-horizontal position, allowing surface water and floating debris to flow over it and into the basket. When the pump shuts off and water flow stops, the weir falls back to a vertical position — this traps the debris already in the basket and prevents it from floating back out into the pool. A missing or broken weir means debris in the basket floats back into the pool every time the pump shuts off. The weir also improves skimming efficiency by creating a thin, fast-moving sheet of surface water flowing into the skimmer, which is more effective at capturing floating debris and oils than an open skimmer throat. Weirs are replaceable separately from the skimmer body in most Hayward, Pentair, and CMP skimmer models — check the skimmer's model number and order the correct weir part before replacing the entire skimmer.
