Diatomaceous Earth (DE) Filters for Swimming Pools

Achieve the clearest pool water possible with a diatomaceous earth (DE) pool filter — the gold standard in residential pool filtration. DE filters capture particles as small as 2–5 microns, far surpassing the 10–15 micron capability of sand filters and the 5–10 micron capability of cartridge filters. PST Pool Supplies stocks DE filters from Hayward and Genesis in sizes from 20 to 65 square feet, starting from $610.

Hayward's Perflex DE filter series (EC40AC, EC65A, EC75A) uses a bump-style cleaning mechanism — instead of full disassembly for backwashing, you simply push and pull the bump handle to redistribute DE powder and extend time between full cleanings. The Perflex design is particularly popular for pools with limited backwash water disposal options. Hayward's ProGrid DE filter series (DE3620, DE4820, DE6020) uses a traditional manifold-and-grid design with a multiport valve for standard backwash operation — the most common DE filter configuration for residential pools. The Genesis 48 sq ft DE filter (GP570004807) is a quality alternative with a 2" FPT multiport valve (GPWVD001) available as a matched set. Hayward filter documentation is available at Hayward's official filter support page.

Selecting the right DE filter size depends on your pool's volume and flow rate. As a general guideline, DE filters should be sized at a turnover rate of 1 gpm per square foot of filter area — a 20,000-gallon pool running a 60 gpm pump needs at minimum a 36 sq ft DE filter, but upsizing to 48–60 sq ft significantly extends time between cleanings. DE filters require adding fresh diatomaceous earth (DE powder) after each backwash — approximately 1 lb of DE per 10 sq ft of filter area. Never backwash a DE filter and then restart without re-coating the grids with fresh DE, as bare grids provide almost no filtration. DE powder is available in our pool chemicals collection. Per EPA guidance, spent DE should be disposed of in accordance with local solid waste regulations — do not discharge backwash water containing DE to storm drains.

Shop DE pool filters and experience the crystal-clear water quality that only diatomaceous earth filtration can deliver.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a DE filter better than a sand or cartridge filter?
DE filters provide the finest filtration of any residential pool filter type — they capture particles as small as 2–5 microns, compared to 10–15 microns for sand and 5–10 microns for cartridge filters. The practical result is noticeably clearer water, particularly in pools with fine debris, algae spores, or high bather loads. The tradeoff is higher maintenance: DE filters require adding fresh diatomaceous earth powder after each backwash and periodic full disassembly for deep cleaning of the filter grids (typically once per season). Cartridge filters require no backwashing and are simplest to maintain but need filter replacement every 3–5 years. Sand filters are the lowest maintenance option but offer the coarsest filtration. For pool owners who prioritize water clarity above all else, DE is the best choice.
What size DE filter do I need for my pool?
DE filter sizing is based on your pool's flow rate (gpm) and the filter's square footage capacity. As a general rule, size at 1 gpm per square foot of filter area at your pump's operating flow rate. For example: a 45 gpm pump paired with a 36 sq ft filter gives a filtration rate of 1.25 gpm/sq ft — acceptable but higher than ideal. Upsizing to a 48 sq ft filter brings this to 0.94 gpm/sq ft, extending time between backwashes and improving filtration efficiency. As a rough pool volume guide: up to 15,000 gallons → 20–36 sq ft; 15,000–25,000 gallons → 36–48 sq ft; 25,000–40,000+ gallons → 48–65 sq ft. When in doubt, go one size larger — an oversized DE filter runs longer between cleanings and causes no performance issues.
How do I add DE powder to my filter after backwashing?
After backwashing a DE filter, you must re-coat the filter grids with fresh diatomaceous earth powder before resuming normal filtration. Use approximately 1 lb of DE per 10 square feet of filter area (e.g., a 48 sq ft filter needs ~4.8 lbs). Mix the DE powder with water in a bucket to form a slurry, then slowly pour it into the pool skimmer while the pump is running on the filter setting — the powder will be drawn into the filter and coat the grids. Do not add DE to the pump basket or directly into the pool. If you add too little DE, fine particles will pass through the bare grid fabric. If you add too much, pressure will rise quickly. Always wear a dust mask when handling DE powder — inhaling fine DE particles is a respiratory hazard.
What is the difference between the Hayward Perflex and ProGrid DE filters?
Both are high-quality Hayward DE filters but use different cleaning mechanisms. The Perflex (EC series) uses Hayward's patented 'bump' cleaning system — a handle on top of the tank redistributes DE and dislodged debris when pumped up and down, extending filter runs significantly before a full backwash is needed. This is ideal for pools with limited backwash disposal options. When a full cleaning is needed, you drain and hose down the internal flex-tube grids. The ProGrid (DE series) uses a conventional internal grid manifold with a standard multiport valve (MPV) backwash port — backwashing is straightforward but requires more water per cleaning cycle. ProGrid filters are compatible with standard multiport valve plumbing setups. Both designs require seasonal disassembly for full grid inspection and cleaning. The Perflex is generally preferred for its reduced water usage during cleaning.
