How to Replace Your Intellichlor Flow Switch

How to Replace Your Intellichlor Flow Switch

Maintaining your pool’s salt chlorine generator is essential for clean, safe water. If your IntelliChlor or iChlor system needs a new flow-temperature switch, this guide will walk you through the replacement process using the Pentair Flow-Temperature Switch Replacement Kit (P/N 520736 for IntelliChlor, P/N 523100 for iChlor). Follow these steps to ensure a smooth installation.

What’s Included in the Replacement Kit

  • Flow-Temperature Switch Assembly
  • Watertight Splice Connectors (Qty. 4)

Tools Needed

  • 1-3/16” (30 mm) adjustable wrench
  • Pliers
  • Wire stripper (optional)

Step-by-Step Guide

Removing the Old Flow-Temperature Switch

  1. Turn Off Power: Disconnect power to the pool pump and salt chlorine generator to ensure safety.
  2. Remove the Switch Cover: Take off the flow-temperature switch cover from the cell (see Figure 1 in the manual). Keep the cover for reinstallation.
  3. Loosen the Cable: Unwrap the cable from around the switch nut, noting the direction of the arrows on top of the nut.
  4. Cut the Cable: Trim the cable close to the switch, leaving enough wire to connect to the new switch (see Figure 2).
  5. Unscrew the Switch: Using a 1-3/16” adjustable wrench, carefully unscrew the switch assembly counterclockwise (see Figure 3). Avoid damaging the cell’s plastic coupling with the wrench.

Installing the New Flow-Temperature Switch

Figure 4
  1. Insert the New Switch: Hand-tighten the new flow-temperature switch into the threaded hole in the cell.
  2. Tighten with Wrench: Use the 1-3/16” wrench to tighten the switch one or two turns past hand-tight. Ensure the arrows on the switch nut align with the flow direction and the center arrow is in the middle (see Figure 4).
  3. Prepare the Cable: Strip back the cut cable from the unit without stripping individual wires.
  4. Connect the Wires:
    Figure 5
    • Insert the RED switch-side wire and RED cell-side wire into a splice connector, then crimp with pliers (see Figure 5).
    • Repeat for the WHITE and BLACK wires.
    • For the GREEN cell-side wire, insert it into a splice connector and crimp. For switches made before September 2018 with a grey cable (GREEN and WHITE wires), insert both into one side of a connector and crimp. Note: These older switches are not compatible with cells made after September 2018.
  5. Secure the Cable: Wrap excess wire around the switch.
  6. Replace the Cover: Reinstall the switch cover (see Figure 6).
  7. Restore Power: Turn on the pool pump and salt chlorine generator.

Important Notes

  • Always follow safety instructions and turn off power before starting.
  • Check compatibility for older switches (pre-September 2018) with newer cells.
